In the Service of Peace

Slovenian Armed Forces members in international positions and on missions pursue the interests of the Republic of Slovenia diligently, commendably and successfully, and contribute to the positive promotion and visibility of the country around the world. They are recognized, among other things, for their professionalism, proficiency and competence. In the settings in which they operate, the civilian population accepts them with trust and affection.

The Republic of Slovenia is therefore a very desirable and esteemed operational partner in international operations and missions.

The basic function of international military cooperation is the implementation of activities that effectively and directly support the operation of the Republic of Slovenia as a partner and fully-fledged member of NATO and the EU.

With the accession of the Republic of Slovenia to the North Atlantic Alliance on 29 March 2004, the Slovenian Armed Forces became even more actively involved in supporting international peace. Its activities include the deployment of SAF members to international operations and missions in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Syria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Serbia, Mali, EU NAVFOR MED, Iraq OIR and Latvia.

Slovenian Armed Forces members are also deployed to peacetime positions in military missions and the NATO's command and force structure, and within the European Union, international organizations and bodies, and multinational staffs or commands.

The basic task of international military cooperation is to conduct activities which effectively and directly support the activities of the Republic of Slovenia as a partner and fully-fledged member of NATO and the EU. The Republic of Slovenia is actively engaged in operations and missions conducted under the auspices of NATO, the European Union, the UN and the OSCE, and on the basis of other international agreements. In this way, we respond to modern security risks with due responsibility and in solidarity, and strengthen our own security.

One of the main functions of the Slovenian Armed Forces listed in Article 37 of the Defence Act is to fulfil the obligations accepted by the Republic of Slovenia within international organizations and international treaties. The Slovenian Armed Forces deploys its members abroad to perform these tasks in accordance with the decisions of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. The Republic of Slovenia devotes special attention to the security and protection of Slovenian Armed Forces members on international operations and missions.
