Size and Structure

The Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF) is made up of the General Staff and its subordinate commands at operational and tactical level, with their units. The General Staff is the most senior military professional command authority of the Slovenian Armed Forces and is tasked with the development, planning, organization, training and operation of the Slovenian Armed Forces. Commands and units are established and organized in accordance with the size and structure of the Slovenian Armed Forces as defined in the long-term programme of defence capability development.

In terms of their combat role, the Slovenian Armed Forces are divided in combat forces, combat support forces, combat service support forces and command support forces. In terms of deployability, the Slovenian Armed Forces are divided in deployable forces, and non-deployable forces. Deployable forces can operate independently or as part of the Allied forces in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia and in crisis areas within and outside the borders of the Alliance.  The non-deployable forces are primarily intended to operate in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia. In terms of levels of readiness the Slovenian Armed Forces we distinguish between high-readiness forces, low-readiness forces and long-term build-up forces.  The Slovenian Armed Forces are not divided into branches, but they do include arms and services.

The Slovenian Armed Forces is structured as a unitary force and is not divided into branches. However, it includes the following arms: infantry, armoured units, aviation, navy, artillery, air defence, engineering, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence, and signals. The Slovenian Armed Forces also has the following services: staff service, information service, military medical service, quartermaster service, technical service, transport service and military police. The materiel, medical and other rear-area needs of the troops in a state of war are mainly met by the civil defence.

In terms of their mission, the Slovenian Armed Forces troops are organized as battle groups and response forces. Given the need for coordinated planning and operation of the forces according to the concept of the Joint Joint Task Force, the forces are organized by components:

  • Land Component,
  • Naval Component,
  • Air Component and
  • Special Forces

TYPES OF FORCES

In terms of their combat role, the SAF are divided in:

  • combat forces,
  • combat support forces,
  • combat service support forces and
  • command support forces.

In terms of capability of deployment, the SAF are divided in:

  • deployable forces and
  • non-deployable forces.

In terms of levels of readiness the SAF are divided in three groups:

  • high-readiness forces (2 – 90 days)
  • lowreadiness forces (91 – 180 days) and
  • long-term build-up forces (more than 365 days).

ORGANIZATION AND COMMAND

The General Staff is the most senior military professional command authority of the Slovenian Armed Forces and is tasked with the development, planning, organization, training and operation of the Slovenian Armed Forces. Commands and units are established and organized in accordance with the size and structure of the Slovenian Armed Forces as defined in the long-term programme of defence capability development.
