The General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces is the highest military professional body exercising command over the armed forces. It fulfils its fundamental purpose and mission by conducting military professional tasks related to force planning and development, organisation of the armed forces, provision of capabilities as well as modernisation and equipping of the armed forces. It plans and coordinates the cooperation, integration and work of the Slovenian Armed Forces within international structures.
Tasks:
- Develop a concept of military defence of the country.
- Prepare military strategic assessments of the situation in the Republic of Slovenia.
- Anticipate future events and prepare relevant responses.
- Provide military advice for the minister of defence and the government.
- Take part in the development of a defence strategy and concepts as well as in the overseeing of the preparation of military doctrine.
- Plan the development, organisation and structure of the Slovenian Armed Forces, and implement military aspect of defence and force planning.
- Oversee the preparation of doctrines and concepts of education and training system.
- Set goals and guidelines relevant to the planning, education, training and practice.
- Oversee the logistic support for the operation of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
- Oversee and coordinate the development of the Slovenian Armed Forces infrastructure and spatial planning.
- Oversee the operation of the system of combat and mobilisation readiness of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
- Oversee military planning and planning of the operation of Slovenian Armed Forces units for the needs of the Alliance.
- Participate in the protection, rescue and relief system upon governmental decision and in accordance with its organisational structure and equipment.
