Tasks

The tasks of the Sports Unit include the employment of top athletes and coaches, promotion of the Slovenian Armed Forces through sports and encouragement of sports within the Slovenian Armed Forces.

Athletes employed in the Sports Unit compete in 27 disciplines: alpinism, alpine skiing, athletics, badminton, biathlon, boxing, snowboarding, gymnastics, mountain biking, sailing, judo, kayak-canoe, kickboxing, cycling, archery, motocross, table tennis, parachuting, swimming, cross-country skiing, speedway, air rifle shooting, sports climbing, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon and rowing.

In the Slovenian Armed Forces, there are currently 14 sport teams, which participate in international competitions organised by the International Military Sports Council CISM (Conseil International du Sport Militaire) and in planned collective preparations at home and abroad.

The International Military Sports Council was established on 18 February 1948, when Belgium, Denmark, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands organised the first international fencing competition for members of different armed forces. The council, which is also a partner of the International Olympic Committee, includes 127 member countries whose servicemembers compete in more than 30 sports disciplines. Every four years, the Military World Games take place, while every year, 25 world championships and more than 100 regional military championships are organised. Slovenia has been a full CISM member since 1992. The Slovenian delegation is represented worldwide by eight members. Their tasks include participating in the formation of a military sports strategy, planning of the participation in CISM competitions, organising CISM championships in Slovenia, preparing proposals for the employment of athletes in the Slovenian Armed Forces and connecting national and military sports.

Sports disciplines in which Slovenian Armed Forces teams compete are the following: athletics, boxing, taekwondo, sailing, judo, cycling, archery, orientation, parachuting, pentathlon, swimming, skiing, air rifle shooting, triathlon and chess.
