Aim and Mission
The Military Mountain School is the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF) development and educational institution under the command of the Doctrine, Development, Education and Training Command. The aim of the school is to train individuals and units for operations in mountainous and other difficult terrain.
Core mission:
- To educate individuals and units
- To train skills and procedures
- To develop training programs and concepts
- To assist with technical support and special equipment
- To perform rescuing activities within civil protection organization
Since the majority of Slovenian terrain is hilly or mountainous, the Slovenian Armed Forces should be well prepared also for mountain warfare. Military operations conducted as a part of asymmetric warfare nowadays include also engagements and operations in mountainous areas which require specific training, readiness, technical and other types of equipment, as well as a specific approach in terms of the doctrine and tactics.
The expertise are provided to develop standardized training and mountain warfare skills, both for individuals and groups, focused on enhancing the overall force capability All types of courses require small groups of students to achieve the best results. The majority of courses are organized for personnel of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia and the Slovenian Armed Forces. They also host foreign participants from NATO and PfP countries, as well as from other countries. In 2010 the Mountain School will offer two types of international courses (basic - summer mountaineering course and advanced - winter mountaineering course). Participation in international courses helps to increase mountaineering knowledge and skills and, more importantly, contributes to developing close relations among NATO and PfP countries. In addition, courses of this kind contribute to regional and global understanding and peace.
