The Military Museum is the internal museum of the Slovenian Armed Forces, whose primary mission is to preserve military and wartime cultural heritage.
Tasks
The Museum monitors, collects, documents, stores, examines, inspects and exhibits museum artefacts, which give evidence of and provide information about historic events, every-day life and achievements of soldiers and armed forces in the territories populated by Slovenians. With such communication, it provides military experts, military historians and the general public an insight into different historic periods which contributed to the creation of present-day Slovenia, Slovenians and the Slovenian Armed Forces. In addition, the museum monitors and documents the development of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
The work of the museum is founded on 15 museum collections which include museum artefacts and moveable cultural objects of heritage. The collections of the museum incorporate museum artefacts, archival and library material, works of fine art, and photography, which are constantly being complemented in accordance with the collecting policy of the museum.
The activities of the museum are divided into regular activities and projects. The former comprise collecting, documenting and storing of cultural heritage while the latter include activities, which require the formation of project groups.
Part of the museum activities includes military history workshops, lectures, symposiums and other forms of meetings with the visitors.
In cooperation with the commands and units of the Slovenian Armed Forces as well as other museums and individual collectors of militaria, the museum plans several thematic exhibitions every year. With these occasional exhibitions, it tours museums, galleries, cultural institutions and military posts around Slovenia and abroad. The museum continuously expands its permanent exhibition of the military history of Slovenians and the Slovenian ethnic territory. It also actively cooperates with the municipality of Pivka in setting up an outdoor museum collection of armoured assets and artillery and rocket weapons. It works with military history museums, institutions and organisations at home and abroad. Such associations result in expert symposiums on topical issues regarding military history and events in the development of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
The museum also organises the research of military history topics and analyses events and periods in Slovenian military history by coordinating the work of research groups. The results of such research are used in history education as part of education programmes of the Doctrine, Development, Education and Training Command. The museum keeps a large collection of Slovenian literature related to military history. It publishes annually two issues of the Military History Journal, which includes expert articles and testimonies of individuals as well as their views on past events in Slovenian military history. |
