Library and Information Centre
Library and Information Centre The Library and Information Centre is the central library of the Ministry of Defence which offers support to the education and training process of the personnel employed by the Ministry, members of the Slovenian Armed Forces and other interested external users.
The Library and Information Centre forms a part of the Slovenian library-information system, which also includes the COBISS electronic catalogue. TasksThe main activity of the library is the providing of information and bibliographic services for all services of the Ministry of Defence. Its collection comprises approximately 100,000 items of library materials, which makes the Centre the largest library in the area of defence and military studies in Slovenia. The organisation of the Ministry of Defence library system is based on a central library and library units. Satellite libraries are professionally managed by its parent service. The bibliographic and informational mission of the Centre is accomplished through procurement, professional and technical treatment of library and information resources, distribution of library materials published by the organisational units of the ministry, information service, loan of own materials and interlibrary loan from Slovenian and foreign libraries. The library is also open for external users who are not employed by the Ministry of Defence. In addition to books, the library also keeps other materials, such as video, audio materials and maps. The information Service provides users with information from the Slovenian communication and information system (COBISS/OPAC) and international data bases. It also provides open access to subscription to current and old issues of expert publications and publications that have been donated to the library by different organisational units of the ministry following study visits of MoD personnel of Slovenian Armed Force members abroad or by members of foreign delegations who have visited Slovenia. As part of the future development and in addition to the complemented regular expert tasks, the library envisages the provision of bibliographic and pedagogical literacy to users and the setting up of an integrated library and information system within the ministry which would focus on a digital library and study cells equipped with state-of-the-art e-learning technology. |
