The General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces is a constituent body of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia and the most senior military professional body to exercise command over Slovenian Armed Forces members. It fulfils its fundamental purpose and mission by conducting military professional tasks relating to force planning and development, organisation, training and operation of the Slovenian Armed Forces. It provides military professional support for the Minister of Defence, Prime Minister and President of the Republic of Slovenia and transforms political decisions into military ones. It serves as a liaison for participation and engagement of the Slovenian Armed Forces in international structures.

 

Mission

Mission of the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces is to provide effective command support for the Chief of the General Staff and to provide professional grounds and resources for the development, operation and sustainment of the required level of readiness of the Slovenian Armed Forces.

Tasks:

• Lead the professionalization and transformation of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
• Lead standardisation in NATO and the EU.
• Prepare military advice for the Minister of Defence.
• Conduct force planning, capability development, modernisation and organisation of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
• Lead and implements human resource policies, manning planning and human resource management in the Slovenian Armed Forces.
• Plan development and direct logistic support of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
• Plan and manage the financial resources of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
• Plan and ensure material resources for the augmentation of Slovenian Armed Forces capabilities.
• Plan and develop military infrastructure.
• Direct education and training in the Slovenian Armed Forces.
• Direct and plan the use and engagement of the Slovenian Armed Forces at home and abroad.
• Conduct crisis management and planning for the Slovenian Armed Forces.
• Assess readiness of the Slovenian Armed Forces and report accordingly.
• Organise and perform staff and functional control.
• Plan and direct military intelligence and security tasks in the Slovenian Armed Forces.
• Draft reports and exchange information with international organisations (NATO, EU, UNO, OSCE)
• Direct and develop the system of protection of classified information in the Slovenian Armed Forces.
• Direct the development of communication and information systems.
• Perform administrative, technical and control tasks related to airworthiness control and certification of military aircraft, licensing of military flight crews and other military flight professionals, military air traffic, and air traffic control and surveillance.
• Implement international treaties on arms control and cooperation in the field of disarmament.
• Determine and implement strategic communication policy and public affairs policy and plan promotion.
• Plan and organise international military cooperation at the strategic level.
• Direct the work of SAF military representations abroad.
• Plan and direct spiritual care activities.
• Plan and direct welfare and support activities and their implementation.
• Cooperate with the Ministry of Defence and other administrative bodies in combined tasks.
