Contents of Contemporary Military Challenges in 2012
Modern security environment is under constant change. It has lately been strongly impacted by changes in resources, both, natural (water, oil, gas, food...) and financial. Especially the latter ones have triggered the transformation of relations among the armed forces throughout the world. While China and India have witnessed accelerated development in certain domains, the EU and United States have been dealing with austerity measures and, consequently, a reduction in resources intended for the provision of security and thus armed forces. Rescuing the Euro is a topical issue in the European Union. NATO with its New Strategic Concept is planning to withdraw from Afghanistan, inter alia, also because of the high cost of the participation in the mission. These world trends have had very different impacts on Slovenia. Changes in financial resources are the ones we perceive, understand and feel the most. There is an impression that security phenomena and potential forms of threats to security are not top national priorities. However, the situation is quite the opposite. There are initiatives to reduce, not only financial but also human resources in the national security system.
In 2012, Contemporary Military Challenges will deal with the following topics:
• Professionalization of the Slovenian Armed Forces (Issue 14/1, article submission deadline 31 January 2012)
• Slovenian national security system and the role of armed forces, and their future (Issue 14/2, article submission deadline 29 February 2012)
• The role of the Republic of Slovenia in international structures and its opportunities in the region of south-eastern Europe, with special emphasis on the Balkans (Issue 14/3, article submission deadline 14 May 2012)
• Contemporary security trends in the world and the influence of economic growth of some countries in the north-eastern hemisphere on the existing ratio of armed forces (Issue 14/4, article submission deadline 10 September 2012 ).
In addition to the proposed platform of topics, the Editorial Board of Contemporary Military Challenges will accept contributions on other topical issues regarding international and national security.
