11th Slovenian UNIFIL Contingent assumed duties in Lebanon

On Friday, 2 December, a ceremony took place at the military base in Shama, southern Lebanon, marking the transfer of duties between two Slovenian Armed Forces contingents. The outgoing commander of the 10th Slovenian UNIFIL Contingent, Lieutenant Colonel Mojmir Lipar handed duties over to the incoming commander of the 11th Slovenian UNIFIL Contingent Lieutenant Colonel Janez Pungaršek. The ceremony was also attended by Commander, Sector West, Brigadier General Carl Lemann, who passed the UN flag from Lieutenant Colonel Lipar to Lieutenant Colonel Pungaršek.

Lieutenant Colonel Lipar addressed the audience, highlighting his pride in the work accomplished by the 10th Contingent, who has accomplished its six-month mission with due professionalism and responsibility. With this ceremony, members of the 11th Slovenian UNFIL Contingent officially took over tasks from their predecessors and committed to continuously perform them with the same diligence and professionalism. As its predecessor, the 11th Slovenian Contingent includes 14 members and will continue to perform the same tasks. Members of the 11th Contingent are all healthy and feeling well.

In line with the Decision of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, SAF members have participated in UNIFIL since December 2006. According to the UN Security Council Resolution 1701, their tasks include the protection of the entire area of responsibility, including the control of the demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel, and all entry points into the southern part of Lebanon. SAF members also assist members of the Lebanese Armed Forces in resolving instabilities in the country.
