The SAF hosts the Capital Commanders' Conference
Between Monday, 28 May and Friday, 1 June, the Slovenian Armed Forces hosted the Capital Commanders' Conference of commanders from Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine. The programme of the event also included a soccer tournament (Miltropa Military Cup) with teams from the participating countries.
The beginnings of the cooperation of capital commanders date back into 1993, when the idea was born about the cooperation of garrison commands located in European capitals. Throughout the years, the cities of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest were joined by commanders from Berlin, Ljubljana, Prague, Kiev and Warsaw. The Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF) joined the initiative in 1996, and since 2013, it has been represented at the conference by the 1st Brigade. The main purpose of the conference is to exchange views and experiences about common tasks, such as military cooperation and cooperation in the fields of culture and sports. The main theme of this year’s conference led by Colonel Robert Glavaš was the discussion about the events of the First World War, while the participants also touched upon the current situation and the role of the armed force in civilian settings. During their visit, commanders were received in the Presidential Palace and at the SAF Force Command and General Staff, where they were acquainted with the structure, tasks and activities of the Slovenian Armed Forces. They visited the museums of Kobarid and Pivka and layed a wreath in honour of the victims of war in Ljubljana.
The conference was also marked by sports spirit. Teams from eight countries competed in a soccer tournament held at Baron Andrej Čehovin Barracks in Postojna. The tournament, which aimed at building up friendship and cooperation was also attended by commanders who proudly cheered for their respective teams.
Partnership such as this one enable commanders to exchange their experiences, cooperate at the level of European military connections and learn about various aspects and viewpoints of commanders from other countries. In 2019, the event will be hosted by the commander from in Prague.
