SAF NCOs conduct leadership seminar for NCOs of the Armed Forces of North Macedonia
Between 3 and 14 June, the Kadetnica military facility in Maribor will be the venue of the Leadership Seminar for non-commissioned officers (NCO) of the Armed Forces of North Macedonia. This is the third Leadership Seminar conducted by the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF). It is conducted entirely in English under the auspices of NATO, and is intended for NCOs of the armed forces who are not yet members of the Alliance. Seminar participants have been addressed by Commander of the SAF Non-Commissioned Officer School, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Simonič, and Senior Enlisted Leader of the Non-commissioned Officer School, First Sergeant Uroš Gornik. Seminar participants include sixteen members of the Armed Forces of North Macedonia and four instructors-observers, members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Ukraine and the Moldavian Armed Forces. The seminar conducted by the SAF Non-commissioned Officer School under the auspices of NATO’s DEEP initiative is led by First Sergeant Aleksander Varga, from the Non-commissioned Officer School.
Lieutenant Colonel Robert Simonič welcomed seminar participants and stressed the importance of implementing the programme both for the participants as well as for the instructors. He wished all participants to acquire a lot of new knowledge and emphasized the importance of sharing experiences and conducting open discussions on the subjects. To acquaint seminar participants with the Republic of Slovenia and Slovenian Armed Forces units, the Non-commissioned Officer School prepared an interesting programme presenting SAF commands and units as well as Slovenia. In his welcome speech, First Sergeant Uroš Gornik, Senior Enlisted Leader of the Non-commissioned Officer School, stressed the importance of implementing the DEEP program and the NCO Leadership Seminar as part of the mission of the SAF Non-commissioned Officer School and NATO’s mission within the Alliance and beyond. He stressed the need for the exchange of experiences and the joining of efforts in developing a future-oriented NCO corps of the Alliance built on the foundations of knowledge, competence, military experiences, integrity and loyalty.
On the second day of the seminar, lectures were given by Sergeant Major Gorazd Škorjanc, Course Director at NATO School Oberammergau, who will soon assume the duties of the NATO School’s Command Senior Enlisted Leader, and Command Sergeant Major Tibor Bogdan, CSEL of the Allied Command Transformation (ACT). Sergeant Major Gorazd Škorjanc presented NATO’s activities focusing on the history, development and functioning of NATO’s NCO corps, while Command Sergeant Major Tibor Bogdan presented the activities and powers of the ACT and highlighted the importance of empowering NCOs from the perspective of the ACT. He expressed satisfaction with the fact that the Slovenian Armed Forces had already achieved this and that the experiences of its NCOs were more than welcome in assisting the partner countries. Both guest lecturers emphasized the utmost importance of creating modern NCO corps, and the important role of the NCO leadership seminar in achieving this aim.
In the context of the seminar, CSEL of the Slovenian Armed Forces, Command Sergeant Major Danijel Kovač hosted the visit of Command Sergeant Major Tibor Bogdan, CSEL ACT. During his visit, the guest was also welcomed by Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces Brigadier General Robert Glavaš.
The representatives of Slovenian Armed Forces NCO corps cooperate with the representatives of the partner countries’ and NATO armed forces in establishing and strengthening mutual collaboration. One of the main tasks defined in the Plan of the activities of the Slovenian Armed Forces NCO corps for 2019 is also to intensify active international cooperation within the partnership in order to facilitate a concrete contribution to the development of modern NCO corps of partner countries. At the seminar, lectures were given by members of the SAF Non-commissioned Officer School and other SAF units with the participation of NATO Command Senior Enlisted Leaders, namely CSEL ACT, CSEL ACO, CSEL NATO School Oberammergau, DEEP Coordinators and others.
The seminar programme is composed of various subjects presenting the successful development of the SAF NCO corps, the efficient functioning of the NCO chain of command and the latest results and achievements in the field of military education and training of non-commissioned officers. The seminar will focus on NATO’s NCO development model, theory of leadership, gender perspective, ratio of officers to non-commissioned officers, role of the non-commissioned officers in the combat operations planning, introduction to andragogy, as well as design and development of military education and training programmes.
