Major General Alenka Ermenc appointed the new Chief of the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed forces
Today, 28 November, a handover ceremony was held at the Ministry of Defence, where Major General Alenka Ermenc took over as Chief of the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces from Major General Alan Geder. At the ceremony, Minister of Defence Karl Erjavec addressed the guests, which also included Prime Minister Marjan Šarec, President of the National Assembly Dejan Židan, Adviser to President of the Republic of Slovenia Uroš Krek and deputies, members of the Committee on the Defence of the National Assembly.
On the occasion, Minister of Defence Karl Erjavec said that Major General Alenka Ermenc was the first female officer to become Chief of the General Staff mainly owing to her excellent performance, knowledge and professionalism. He also said that she enjoyed his trust in light of the tasks awaiting the Slovenian Armed Forces and stressed that, neither the new Chief of the General Staff nor the politicians politicized the Slovenian Armed Forces, but rather achieved goals on the basis of hard work and expertise. As some of the goals, the Minister listed the improvement of status of Slovenian Armed Forces members, and the provision of the equipment to ensure Slovenian Armed Forces members a safe performance of tasks. He committed himself to working with Major General Alenka Ermenc during his tenure to increase the level of preparedness of the Slovenian Armed Forces. Minister Erjavec also said that Major General Alan Geder was one of the pioneers of the Slovenian Armed Forces and expressed his appreciation for Major General Geder’s contribution to the development of the Slovenian Armed Forces both in his capacity as Chief of the General Staff as well as throughout his career.
Major General Alenka Ermenc said that she was taking over as Chief of the General Staff with full responsibility both towards the Slovenian Armed Forces and her homeland, with full respect towards her predecessor and those who had appointed her, and with firm determination to accomplish all that is necessary. She said that she was well aware of the expectations of the general public and that she intended to perform her duties effectively and with due professionalism. As her priorities, she highlighted the improvement of the status of Slovenian Armed Forces members, implementation of capability targets and the fields of military infrastructure and expertise. She concluded with a Latin saying “Acta, non verba” (Deeds, not words).
Major General Alan Geder said that he had continuously applied due diligence to all his tasks in the Slovenian Armed Forces. He underlined the challenges of the Slovenian Armed Forces and wished the new Chief of the General Staff Major General Alenka Ermenc successful work. In the Slovenian Armed Forces, Major General Alan Geder will continue to work on major tasks related to Slovenian Armed Forces development, equipping and training projects.
