9th Slovenian Armed Forces Contingent assumes duties in Mali
On Monday, 15 May, the Koulikoro training centre in Mali was the venue of a ceremony marking the handover of duties between the 8th and the 9th Slovenian Armed Forces contingents in the European Union Training Mission Mali (EUTM Mali). The five members of Slovenian contingent continue the mission of their predecessors within the Education and Training Task Force Headquarters and as instructors of Malian Armed Forces within EUTM Mali Mobile Training Task Force and Combined Mobile Advisory and Training Teams.
At the end of the handover ceremony, members of both contingents commemorated the Slovenian Armed Forces Day with a short ceremony and promoted a member of the 9th contingent to a higher rank.
The end of activities of the 8th Slovenian contingent concluded with a ceremony marking the completion of training of two newly formed companies and a platoon supporting the Malian Armed Forces. The three-month training was successfully completed by 280 soldiers, non-commissioned officers and officers, including the 10,000th member of the Malian Armed Forces trained by EUTM Mali members since 2013.
The mission of the EUTM Mali’s third mandate between May 2016 and May 2018 is to ensure military education, advice and training of the Malian Armed Forces with the aim to support its reform and improvement of defence capabilities on the territory of the Republic of Mali as well as to protect its citizens. EUTM Mali was established on 17 January 2013 and is, in addition to other international organisations and Malian authorities, one of the key factors contributing to the enforcement of the Algeria Peace Process and the establishment of a safe environment in Mali after the outburst of civil war in 2012.
